What is a vehicle relocation service?

A vehicle relocation service is auto transport built around a move rather than around a truck: the car leaves when your household plan says it should and arrives at the new address, so nobody has to drive a second vehicle across four states. Dawley Logistics handles it out of Burlington, Wisconsin on our own nine-car haulers where the lane reaches, and through DS Brokerage everywhere else.

The four we run most

Moves we handle every month

The relocations we run out of southeast Wisconsin are not interchangeable. A closing date behaves nothing like a report date, and the planning changes with it.

  • Job transfer

The start date is fixed and the house sale rarely lines up with it. We work backward from the first day at the new office, not from the closing.

  • College

Move-in weekends put every family in the same lot at the same hour. Booked early, the car beats the crowd; booked late, it waits behind it.

  • Military orders

PCS dates move. Tell us the report window and the flexibility you have, and we build the pickup around what the orders actually allow.

  • Bought it online

A car found three states away, delivered to your driveway. The seller or dealer hands it to our driver; you never book a one-way flight.

Heading south for the winter instead of moving for good? That is a different rhythm entirely — see seasonal snowbird shipping for the seasonal round trip.

Prep list

How to get a car ready the day before

Twenty minutes of prep is the difference between a five-minute handover and a delayed truck. Do these the night before a vehicle relocation pickup.

  • Wash it, or at least rinse it — condition photos are only as good as the paint is visible
  • Empty the cabin down to the essentials and take toll transponders out
  • Leave about a quarter tank of fuel, no more
  • Note any existing damage so the bill of lading matches reality
  • Fold mirrors, remove roof boxes, disable the alarm
  • Put a spare key in your pocket and hand the working one to the driver
Sequencing

Where the car fits in a household move

Most people book the movers first and think about the car last, which is backwards: a moving van can wait an afternoon, a hauler already routed out of Burlington across four states cannot.

Give us the fixed date in your move — the closing, the flight, the report date — and we schedule the pickup against it rather than against a guess.

Dates that drive the pickup
  • Closing day
  • Lease end
  • Movers’ load window
  • Your flight
  • First day at work
  • Dorm move-in
  • Report date

Two to three weeks of notice gives you a choice of days. Inside a week, the calendar chooses for you.

Getting it right

Three things that decide how a relocation goes

Long-distance vehicle relocation fails on logistics, not on trucks. These are the three we settle before anything is booked.

The date

One fixed point, not four

We build the pickup around the single date that cannot move. Everything else in a move has slack; that one does not.

The street

Where 75 feet fits

A loaded hauler needs room to stop, load and pull out. New subdivisions, apartment complexes and city blocks usually mean a nearby lot, arranged when you book.

The number

Held through the move

Moving costs creep from every direction. This one does not: the quote stands, provided the vehicle’s condition and modifications were disclosed.

Who actually moves the car

Book it through the movers, or direct with a carrier?

Most moving companies will happily add vehicle relocation to the estimate. What they are selling is a referral, and the difference shows up on pickup day.

Added to the moving bill

Handed to someone else

  • Van lines move household goods; the car is usually placed with an outside carrier
  • Your questions route through a coordinator who is not driving
  • The line item can be revised when the placement costs more than planned
  • You find out who is coming when the truck is already on the road
Direct with Dawley

The carrier answers

  • Our own haulers cover the Midwest corridor; DS Brokerage places the rest on carriers we vet
  • Jeremy takes the call, and the update comes from someone who knows the truck
  • One price, agreed before anything is reserved
  • Active USDOT 3739382 and MC 1323099 you can check yourself
How the haulers load

Relocating something rare or freshly painted along with the daily driver? Put that one on the enclosed deck and let the rest ride open — same move, two decks.

Move day, step by step

How your relocation runs from here

  1. Give us the fixed date

The one day in your move that cannot shift, plus both addresses and the vehicle.

  2. You get the number and the window

One price for the lane and a realistic pickup window. Nothing is reserved until you say yes.

  3. Handover at your end

At the house in Burlington, or at the lot we agreed on. Condition goes on the bill of lading, keys change hands, the hauler leaves.

  4. Waiting when you arrive

Same inspection at the new address. If anything is off, the process pauses with the carrier and you have an action plan within 24 hours.

Questions about vehicle relocation

What kinds of moves do you handle?

Job relocations, college moves, military moves and online car purchases are everyday work, anywhere in the lower 48.

What do you need to book a vehicle relocation?

Six answers. Both full addresses, not just the cities. The earliest day it can go and the day it has to be there. The access at each end. The vehicle’s year, model, ride height, modifications and whether it starts. Who is handing it over. And what is staying inside, up to 100 lb of non-valuable items.

Should the car ship before or after the movers come?

Build it around the one date that cannot move — the closing, the flight, the report date or dorm move-in — and let the rest flex. A moving van can wait an afternoon; a hauler already routed across four states cannot. Two to three weeks of notice gives you a choice of pickup days.

What should I do with the car the night before pickup?

Rinse it so the condition photos actually show the paint, empty the cabin and pull the toll transponder, leave about a quarter tank, and note any existing damage so the bill of lading matches reality. Fold the mirrors, disable the alarm, and keep a spare key while the working one goes to the driver.

Can I leave things in the car?

Up to 100 lb of non-valuable personal items. Keep valuables out of the vehicle.

Will the price change after I book?

No. The number we quote is the number you pay, even if it costs us more to secure the carrier. The one condition: the vehicle’s condition and any modifications have to be disclosed when you book. No hidden fees, no negotiation, no asterisk.

Am I committed once I get a quote?

No. There is no commitment until final pricing is confirmed and payment is arranged. If the carrier has not picked up the vehicle yet, cancelling is not a problem.
